Self-learning, self-developement

In today's busy world, it is very important to keep up with trends.

I started my professional career for over 15 years, and during this time the world has significantly changed. Many new software has been published on the market and a lot of new methodologies have been applied.

15 years ago, I had a SAP User Access and an Excel workbook. That was my working tool. Today I use several corporate softwares, and I have learned the tips and tricks of database management (Such as SQL, MS Access, Power Query, Power BI).

But why is continuous learning important?

On one hand, to develop. There is no person who knows everything, even within their own field. You can always learn something new. It is important to be open-minded. Learning is not equal to participate in school-lessons. You can do a lot for your development by sharing and discussing your experiences with your colleagues and friends.

On the other hand, to expand your capabilities. You may be a Financial Analyst today, but in a few years you will be working as a financial controller.

If you don’t understand something, don't be ashamed to ask for help. No one will look you stupid if you don't know something, or you are not 100% sure. You can save time with it.

But how do I train myself?

Usually people participate on trainings because of the employer’s pressure.

On one hand, it is good if the training is useful. But I’m almost sure, that 70% of that trainings in only wasting time (and the compyny’s money).

Let’s see how to start.

  • Write a list of your weaknesses, what you want to improve (you want to polish your Excel, you want to learn database management, maybe you want improve your VBA skills…)
  • Think about what you want to achieve in the next 3-5 year period. In what position would you like to see yourself? This is a good point to know what training you need to achieve your goal.
  • Talk about it with your friends and family. If you want to be a controller, then you have a lot of contacts on LinkedIn who work in that position (I’m almost sure). Get in touch with them and dare to ask.

Learning methods

I belive in online/video trainings. Surely there are good classroom trainings, but you can do video trainings in your own dynamics.

Let's see what forums we have:

Youtube

https://youtube.com

I'm not saying that this is the best way of learning, but many things can be learned from youtube (especially the basics).

If you are not sure what you want to learn, then it is definitely a good way to taste a topic.

Podcasts

Similarly to YouTube, you can collect a lot of information through various podcasts. There are also a lot on Spotify.

It is also good for information collection, or learning the basics.

LinkedIn Learning

https://learning.linkedin.com/

It’s not free, but there are many good online trainings on it.

And you can have one or two months free trial.

Udemy

https://www.udemy.com/

Also not free, but very useful.

I suggest udemy, if you are aware of what you want to learn exactly.

Special professional online trainings
